After Cristian Tănase, it was unfortunately Cristian Săpunaru's turn to become unavailable for reporting to the national squad for the first two EURO 2012 Qualifiers matches against Albania (September 3rd, 2010, at 9 P.M on "Ceahlăul" Stadium in Piatra Neamţ) and respectively against Belarus (September 7th, 2010, at 8.30 P.M. on "Dinamo" in Minsk).
FC Porto defender had an accident in minute 59 of the game which his team won 2-0 on Rio Ave pitch during the 3rd match of the Portuguese championship, 2010 – 2011 edition.
To fill Săpunaru's place in the squad, national team coach Răzvan Lucescu summoned Cosmin Contra from Timişoara who is thus returning to the national squad after more than one year.
