Spain, Germany, and England come to EURO U19 in Romania

Spain, the reigning U19 European champion and nine-time winner of the tournament in its current format, qualified by winning a competitive and challenging group, eliminating France, Italy (the host of the group), and Latvia. The Spanish side defeated France 2-1, drew 2-2 with Italy, and secured a dominant 4-1 win over Latvia. Italy, despite beating France 2-0, surprisingly drew 1-1 with Latvia in their opening match.

Germany, a two-time U19 European champion, dominated the Elite Round group they hosted and reached the final tournament with a perfect record of three wins out of three. The Germans secured a 2-0 victory against Slovenia, a 2-1 win over Finland, and a narrow 1-0 triumph over Ireland, completing their qualification campaign without conceding a single goal!

England, also a two-time U19 European champion, played in an Elite Round group hosted in Wales, winning the group ahead of the hosts, Turkey, and Portugal. The British team started with a 2-0 win against Wales, followed by a goalless draw against Turkey, and clinched qualification with a decisive 1-0 victory over Portugal.

Two nordic teams, the Netherlands, and a debutant!

The Netherlands, a EURO U19 semifinalist in 2017, qualified as group winners in a section hosted by the Czech Republic, finishing ahead of the hosts, Croatia, and Luxembourg. The Dutch team began the Elite Round with a 2-1 win over Croatia, followed by a surprising 0-0 draw with Luxembourg, but secured qualification with a dominant 4-0 victory against the Czech Republic.

Norway, a EURO U19 semifinalist in 2023, earned their place at the tournament in Romania from a highly competitive group hosted in Serbia, alongside the host nation, Belgium, and Israel. The Norwegians had a perfect run, winning all three matches: 2-0 against Belgium, 2-1 against Israel, and 2-1 against Serbia. Interestingly, their last two victories were secured with goals in stoppage time!

Denmark joins Norway in representing the Nordic region after an impressive qualification campaign, winning their group with maximum points against Austria, Hungary (the host), and Iceland. The Danes won their first two matches without conceding a goal (2-0 against Iceland and 1-0 against Hungary), then sealed their qualification with a 2-1 victory over Austria in the decisive match.

Montenegro will make its debut at a continental U19 final tournament following an outstanding performance in another highly competitive Elite Round group hosted by Georgia. The Montenegrins drew 1-1 with Slovakia, defeated Poland 1-0, and, needing a win in their final match to qualify at Poland’s expense, they delivered a 3-1 comeback victory over Georgia despite trailing from the 7th minute!
